Do you use mobile a lot?

There is a flip side to cell phones as well! The Cell Boom, a boon to communication has turned a bane to family relationships, according to a recent study.

As part of the study, more than a thousand steady mobile phone users were tracked for over 2 years. The study revealed a definite decline in satisfied family relationships, attributed to constant mobile communication that invaded work and home life. The negative impact was perceived when work-related communication, at home, disrupted positive vibes that foster family communication, and over a period lead to breakdown of family ties. On the same breath, household matters also consumed work time.

Working Women were found to frequently relive similar situations, as compared to men, according to Noelle Chesley, Author of this study and an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Mommies received SOS calls from children reporting earth-shattering events leaving harried moms to handle the situation, the child and the work scene! This tight rope balancing can cause a build up of stress and abet an impending blow-up in family unions.

The important message of the study is that, cell phones and pagers allow increased intrusion in communication between work and home, and those who reported cataclysmic intrusions were decidedly cribbing about family life. Chesley also indicates a solution for the burgeoning malady. Employers could tailor Employee Communication policy around reasonable expectations. Employees, on their part, could consider allocating family time during which communication devices can be shut off. Working mothers to be given reprieve by fathers to handle Child matters on designated days. These findings have been published in the Journal of Marriage and Family.
